I made it just like the recipe and it was SO practiced! My hubby loved it and that says a lot considering I call him the Nutrient Diva. My brother-in-law enjoyed it also. Everyone was stuffed and I would definitely make it once more! The pepper gives it a nice kick too.
08/29/2010
Not a new recipe to me - merely ane that I hadn't fabricated in a long time. 1 tip - if you let this sit and don't serve immediately, exist prepared to add more milk. I also upped the flavour a bit past using finely diced red onion browned with the beefiness and added a small amount of worcestershire sauce plus fresh chopped parsley. Served over toast with sliced fresh tomatoes, this fabricated a very satisfying meal.
12/24/2009
I created this for supper one nighttime when I didn't take anything else to cook merely had all the ingredients on mitt. Nothing fancy but really good - the whole family liked it! I added some cerise pepper flakes in it merely for some added sense of taste. Served it over biscuits, all of information technology was gone in a matter of minutes. Will make once again :)

I am an Army brat and I have fond memories of my dad making SOS for me in the mornings before schoolhouse when he was habitation. I used this recipe today and it was wonderful. Cheers and so much for taking the time to put your recipe on here. I didn't drain the beefiness, but I did use extra lean hamburger meat so that there wasn't quite then much grease in the skillet. :) YUM! (And I think it is Best over toast...the toastiness is nice with the gravy!)
10/19/2011
I ate SOS near every twenty-four hours for breakfast in the army for over xx years, if it was avail. I just dear the stuff. notation that chicken bouilon is not part of the armys version of creamed beefiness, and this one is as well missing worcestershire sauce.
12/02/2011
Very hearty, stick-to-your ribs comfort food. Fabricated information technology exactly as written (used 73/27 footing beef) and it was very tasty. May increase seasoning a bit next fourth dimension. I was worried it would be really peppery, but I actually couldn't really sense of taste the pepper. The spices were all nicely balanced, and non one flavour overpowered another, so if I practise increase the seasoning, I'd keep them at the same ratio to each other. :::EDIT::: I made this once again with slightly leaner beef (80/20) and the sauce was WAY as well thick this time around without that extra fat to soak up the flour. It yet tasted great (I did double the seasoning this fourth dimension), just I think in the time to come when using 80/20 basis chuck I'll reduce the flour to 1/3 loving cup.
06/11/2011
This was splendid. My husband loved it. Nonetheless I did make a couple of additions to lucifer our tastes. I added a slice of diced crimson onion to the cooking meat mixture, and a couple of dashes of worcestershire sauce when I added milk. I also used buttermilk instead of regular milk. I did take to use 2 cups of milk instead of but 1 1/ii cups, merely that was expected from other reviews. Overall I will be making this again, and once more.
12/xx/2009
I used basis sausage and added a cup more of milk, and my whole family loved it and asked to accept it again. Next time we might have it on biscuits.
03/13/2010
Nice season, this really had some flavour different some SOS recipes. I had to add another half cup of milk though as this was too thick. This makes a fast and easy dinner. Nosotros are going out of boondocks and needed to utilize upwards the milk and bread and this did both. Thanks.
ten/03/2012
I condiser myself a connoiseur of creamed beef, chipped beefiness, etc. The only recommendation I would add is a trick to non overdoing the flour corporeality is to add a one-half loving cup of milk in one case the burger has browned, bring it to a low boil and so add the flour, whisking in one tablespoon at a time. This allows you to get the consistency right instead of back pedaling. Add together more milk and flour as desired merely ut the milk in first. Otherwise information technology can and by and large will go lumpy. Enjoy! Ah!, the smell of diesel fuel in the morning!
02/21/2011
EXCELLENT!!! So very tasty!! Although I was leery of using chicken burgoo, I am and so glad I did, and followed the recipe exactly as written. This is, by far, the BEST recipe for SOS!!! Wish my dad, who was a WWII Air Corp veteran, was still with us to taste information technology. (He used to mix the flour in earlier browning, and, although succulent, his was a little too greasy for my liking.) This version immune me to drain what little grease there was (I used ground round), and it notwithstanding came out awesome!!! My husband insisted on seconds!!!! Thank you SO much for sharing!!
03/ten/2010
I used to make this all the time, but west/o the craven bullion. I fixed information technology exactly like the recipe & information technology's perfect.
07/09/2014
I just made this recipe for my ailing 94 twelvemonth former father and he ate it. He always talked about eating this in WWII and my mom used to arrive frequently. He has not had it in years and I have been trying to cook things to entice him to eat. This recipe did it and I served it over real mashed potatoes. The trick is definitely the grease. I used a little more milk and a lilliputian more than pepper. Turned out dandy!
04/04/2011
I grew upward eating this...my mother was the worst melt, but this was so like shooting fish in a barrel to make that even she got it right. Im making information technology for the family this evening.
04/11/2011
This was just okay. The season really wasn't there and it was and so thick that it just saturday so heavy on my breadbasket. Also the pepper somehow over powered it.
08/16/2013
My dad was an Army human, but my mom never made this at home. When I constitute the recipe, I had to try information technology. After my family decided they liked it, I called my dad to tell him I made "Regular army special" for dinner. He knew it was SOS correct away! I am bringing him some tomorrow. BE Certain Not TO ADD EXTRA SALT when making this. I used a spice alloy that I use routinely, and forgot about the salt in that and the chicken bullion. I added more milk and cooked it a little longer to attempt to thin the saltiness, but it is still salty. Nosotros served information technology with biscuits, and my 15 year sometime football player ate four biscuits opened up with SOS on each side. Estimate the extra salt is only replenishing his loss from workouts. ;) Side by side time we will try it with a hamburger and breakfast sausage mixture and serve it over hash brownish patties as suggested by another reviewer. Thanks for sharing!
06/02/2014
Delicious! I used ii cups of milk to get the flossy texture. 2d fourth dimension I made it, I added a cup and a half cooked cubed Yukon potatoes, worchestire sauce and a can of peas and diced carrots. Made a thick bulky stew. One fourth dimension I added an envelope of dry onion soup mix. That added an awesome flavor. Either way, information technology's a hit at my house and so versatile.
01/05/2010
Very yummy! Although the SOS I'k familiar with is more creamy and then how this recipe turns out. I followed the recipe as stated simply besides added some garlic salt. Hubby likewise thought it would be proficient with mushrooms, but I liked it how it is. Volition make again. Quick and easy and my family unit loved it!
03/05/2011
VERY Skilful! Mine turned out to be very thick though. Nigh probable my fault because I did utilize more ane pd. beef. My husband loved it! will brand again .
04/12/2010
This is a favorite dish from my childhood and a go to recipe after Easter to apply upwardly hardboiled eggs, which nosotros chop up and serve with the dish. I followed the seasonings listed in this recipe for the meat mixture, but followed my ain recipe for the sauce. It was a happy mix and very delicious. Even my ii pickiest children liked it!! =D
01/25/2010
sorry couldn't get the i/ii star in.......this was delish, loved information technology, very piece of cake to make.....mine did turn out very thick I really added a bit more milk and poured it over whole wheat pasta........
10/30/2013
Never did I recollect my fellow was gonna go for this dish...only i remembered my dad making it for the states, well...swain liked it so did I! Information technology was like shooting fish in a barrel, filling and very tasty.. We served information technology over toast, and now this is my get to meal for those nights when you lot only don't want to make something overly complicated! Thanks for posting, brought me back memories of my dad....
04/25/2010
iv ane/two this was pretty corking, I chose it as it seemed to take the most flavor of all the SOS recipes. I followed the ingredients and was very pleased, the flavors were yummers. I served it over toast, which was good. Next time, i will brand it and so there is more gravy and try information technology over noodles. I thought about irresolute the chicken bouillon for beef, but decided to try it equally meant to exist, and glad I did. Thank you for this.
02/21/2013
I made this tonight. I did it exactly similar the recipe said except I did use two cups of milk, which I thought made just the right consistency. It was absolutely succulent! Who would think something then simple could taste so good. The blend of seasonings is perfect~ Tin't look to make it once more!!
11/15/2013
Made this today and there is a tiny bit leftover, merely not much! I omitted garlic and burgoo because that's how my mom always made information technology, and added a 1/2 cup more milk. Terrific over divide-open biscuits!! YUM!!
03/27/2014
This came out great. I didn't really measure the ingredients, I adjusted on the fly for more than servings. Thanks for the recipe
09/16/2013
After reading the reviews I made some changes. I added fresh mushrooms and one onion. I fried them with the hamburger. I did not use the onion pulverisation. And I added i package of brown gravy which made information technology creamier. I used seasonings to sense of taste. My wife loves this dish.
09/08/2014
Excellent! Neat flavor!
05/10/2010
I take not really used this recipe, but with the exception of the onion powder the ingredients are exactly the aforementioned as my version, but I cooke mine differently. I'm an army brat and have been eating this dish for 40 years. My kids eat it and always enquire for information technology. We usually swallow information technology for breakfast but sometimes have information technology for dinner. Having made it for years I don't measure but I cook the ground beef adding salt and garlic powder or adobo seasoning, then drain it. I remove the beef from the pan and make a roux with flour and butter, stir in mik plus water or chicken broth. I add together chicken boullion paste to the sauce, seasoning to taste, and then add the beef dorsum to the sauce. Actually good over buttered toast.
x/05/2010
i simply gave it 3 stars because i had to modify the recipe and i know the original way would have been better. i did not have milk then i used my dorsum-upwardly box of powdered milk. the gravy wasnt as expert equally i think it could take been. i addded onion and garlic to the beefiness. i also added some worcestershire sauce. there was still a little season defective, so at the end, right before serving, i stirred in a few slices of cream cheese! it actually helped with the flavour and texture of the gravy. i will definitely brand this again, but i volition make certain i accept milk the next fourth dimension!
07/17/2011
my dad was in the Army 42 years ago and loved the SOS. He loved this recipe.
01/fourteen/2010
This was a very tasty, comforting dish! Like already mentioned by some other, this is no cuisuine although it is a delic Dish! The only matter I inverse when cooking this recipe was add the two things I Always am cooking with! I cooked the beef with minced galic, forth with the powders and at the terminate while information technology smmered I added about ii tabs of butter to requite a little more than oomph of flavor. My young man made a mmmm mmmm mmmm merely I don't think he enjoyed it equally much as I did. The all-time office was it was a snap to put together and cook! But that's probably why this recipe is no cuisine!
02/04/2013
This recipe is right on!!!!! Information technology is delicious and even the kids liked it!! Super piece of cake to brand besides
01/27/2011
very good and stix to ya ribs

11/02/2014
I've never heard of SOS. I loved it. Two of my three super picky kids loved information technology! Thanks!
02/11/2018
I made this tonight, equally written. I did add diced fresh onion, instead of onion powder. Delicious !!! My 9 yr old gave it 25,000 stars ! He is my toughest critic. Served over biscuits. You lot will find that you'll need to add together more milk, not a big deal. As former military myself I must say iv.0 sir.
10/eleven/2010
I don't know if i did it wrong, merely it didn't turn out well at all, which is a shame.
05/04/2010
Simple and tasty! My toddler took i bite..inspected it with great interest, and so ate her entire portion saying "mmmm". This is a keeper for a quick and like shooting fish in a barrel meal. Thanks!!!
02/24/2012
I have made this so many times earlier. The lady that told me how to make this chosen it hamburger gravy. I judge there was more than milk added to get in creamier. But I have put it over rice, noodles, toast, biscuits etc. y'all go the point information technology is very versatile. I accept even used ground sausage and made it for breakfast over biscuits. Very good. Beloved this recipe it is the best way to brand a white gravy when you are using sausage or hamburger.
01/11/2011
I simply fabricated SOS with one lb. footing venison, ii 1/2 cups milk, 1 cup flour, pepper, and herbed salt (A. Vogel Herbamare). It's delicious! Blightie
02/11/2018
I made this today lol it'south cracking! I apply to make this all the fourth dimension equally a melt in the NAVY!!!!!
11/30/2017
Delicious, and needs no changes or improvements!
08/06/2015
Glue like texture.
10/08/2010
Yummy! I have made it twice and needed to double the amount of milk in the recipe. The first fourth dimension I made it, I served it over white rice. The 2nd time, I made it with breakfast sausage and served it over biscuits.
03/xiv/2012
I added fresh mushrooms and some cherry pepper flakes. I had to use more milk cause it tasted to much like flour without the extra. Was adept, just non sure I would go far again. Merely not something I would want to eat on a regular basis.
06/01/2017
Made information technology just similar your recipe. Came out perfect. One of the best things about the Army l years ago. Cheers a lot.
05/07/2017
Information technology was very proficient served on toast topped with a chopped hard boiled egg. The next dark I mixed in some sour foam and a can of mushroom soup and served it over noodles, similar a quick hamburger stroganoff.
04/06/2010
It was fine, just nothing special.
11/25/2012
My husband was a military brat. His Dad would make this for breakfast. My husband said I "nailed information technology" when I made this for dinner ane night. I used extra lean meat just the next fourth dimension I would use 80/xx. It does add to the season.
01/15/2010
I loved mess hall food when I was a young Marine and look forwards to this retentiveness!!!
08/09/2010
Total comfort nutrient...yummy. I didn't think it was going to be thick enough but equally it sat it got too thick. So next time I will either serve it right away or add together some more than milk. Served over whole wheat toast.
11/05/2019
I think the recipe is awesome just the way it is. I used a higher fat percentage hamburger( cheaper in price) and it tasted keen. Everyone who tried information technology admittedly LOVED it. Cheers John for sharing your tasty recipe!
09/02/2018
Tried this with ground pork, and it works great! We like ours a fleck runnier to mix with rice and then next time I'll add an extra cup of milk.
03/27/2020
I did bandy out the cubed bouillon for dried beef. My mom used to make this for our family.
eleven/08/2010
Great meal quick and like shooting fish in a barrel. I volition brand this again
08/fifteen/2015
Made it just as the recipe was written for a quick and filling dinner. It was the all-time SOS recipe I accept e'er plant. Whole family unit loved it. Will keep and brand once again.
02/22/2017
This was a fiddling thick for us. I added a Worcestershire sauce. I would ship it out a little more side by side time and maybe even used half pound of hamburger instead of a full.
03/09/2010
Good. My dad went crazy over information technology.
10/20/2019
Came out not bad, remind me of my war machine days LOL
07/04/2020
Loved it! Made it as directed and information technology was a hit with my boys who are picky eaters. Next time I will add a scrap more milk considering mine thickened very speedily to a paste, but I utilise very lean meat and never have grease.
06/14/2010
I commonly make sausage gravy, just didn't have any sausage. However, I had some leftover ground beef that I needed to use, and so I tried this recipe. It was very elementary to make and very good! I double the amount of flour and milk to make actress gravy so that nosotros could use it on some potatoes. I served the balance over biscuits. It thickened nicely.
01/12/2020
Very well put together recipe,. You should edit the part where it say annihilation other than HAMBURGER...and craven bullion...If yous ain't tried stale chipped beef "aka dried beef gravy". Man, you ain't tried nothin. Hamburger doesn't add the salt and color required for some good ol fashion sos. Probably why the demand for bullion cubes
01/25/2010
Followed the recipe exactly and this turned out wonderful! Quick, easy, succulent utilise of ground beef...information technology'south a keeper for usa!
09/16/2015
This is a very simple meal that I savour. It actually was piece of cake to make and tastes great!
01/05/2020
This was soo delicious!! It totally reminded me of being a kid! Will be making this again!!
03/26/2020
This is a pretty good recipe, simply I added fresh garlic instead of powdered and a sliced upwards onion to the mix. Also used a tin of beefiness broth instead of chicken bouillon cubes. Was amazing!
09/xv/2019
My husband, who was an Air Force brat and whose mother made SOS, liked it but establish it drier than it should be. We agreed that was considering I used 93% lean ground beefiness. I'1000 going to brand it once more but will use 85% lean ground beef!
07/twenty/2010
This was good for a quick, "what am I gonna make with footing beef this evening" meal.
10/13/2017
I followed the recipe to the letter of the alphabet. It got a little thicker that I thought it would so I added ane/2 cup more milk and it was more than to our liking. I served it over butter flavored biscuits. I will make it over again and maybe use less flour or use 2 cups of milk instead of 1½ cups like the recipe calls for. Information technology's a keeper. My wife and I both liked it. Correct me if I'm wrong, just I thought the original SOS was made with chipped beef.
02/15/2017
Grew up eating this too! This is exactly how my dad made it too. Yes I'm an Air Force brat! This is the real bargain on how it's made. Good anytime of twenty-four hours!
08/08/2018
I served information technology over fridge biscuits. Succulent
04/11/2010
I idea this tasted bully for such a simple recipe. Then quick and easy that it'll exist an "I don't experience similar cooking" staple from now on. I ended upwards adding much more than milk, as the consistency was besides thick for my taste, merely I also kept information technology on the heat longer than I needed to, waiting for my side dish to be ready. I might play with draining the fat (at least partially) and adding in broth instead, even though information technology says not to, just to encounter how it turns out.
03/21/2020
This is how my dad used to brand it when I was a kid. He was a veteran of Vietnam. When I was in, SOS was merely the same in the DFAC. At present I'1000 making it. Peachy recipe.
08/04/2020
Love this recipe version! Added diced bong pepper, Vidalia sugariness onion, Serrano pepper, and Tony'southward, plus i/four cup milk more. So yummy!
12/12/2018
This dish fills me with nostalgia. Thanks for the help on flour/milk proportions.
12/30/2019
Very good loved it.
11/05/2020
This recipe is perfect, just like the Navy cooks in the galley made it during my career. I similar to ratchet up the heat, so I'll put a 1/iv tsp of ground cayenne in mine, or similar chili flakes. Habanero chili powder, if you lot are serious about information technology. I make a big batch and then freeze it in portions and vacuum pack information technology for hiking trips. Makes a fast, nutritious poly peptide that can be eaten common cold or hot on the fly and keeps well.
06/23/2010
This is Outstanding! I liked the creamed beefiness in the Marines simply I can tell you it wasn't at all like this. My son who is picky, asks me to brand it quite often. I usually put it over hash browns but it is and then good I would consume off the bottom of the trash can. Thank you for sharing this recipe
03/28/2018
Thank yous John for the recipe. Made me grinning when I saw and tried your recipe. My Dad would mention this . Simple and good. Next time, I would add together 1/2 cup of minced onion and some worchestershire sauce. Taffy
10/31/2017
had no milk so I used cream of craven soup and ane/2 a tin of water. I didn't desire to sparse it out too much so added sour foam ( 1/2 cup) so so good
04/28/2020
My family loved it and it's uncomplicated to make, and very filling we will exist making it again.
09/xiii/2016
Turned out really well....
01/27/2020
I detected a picayune bit as well much garlic in the recipe so the side by side time nosotros brand it will reduce the amount of garlic powder that we use.
07/04/2010
I love information technology! My married man (who is a very picky eater) loves it as well!
12/16/2015
Great for last infinitesimal and little ingredients. Very filling...anybody went back for seconds...no leftovers. Side by side time I'thou adding Jimmy Dean sausage.
07/18/2020
Takes me dorsum to my time in the military. Required more milk to continue it loose/smoothen. Volition make once more for sure.
05/21/2020
Came out very good. Brought dorsum memories of when my grandpa used to make it. I had his recipe but lost it quite a few years ago. This is spot on, only change I made from what I remember of his was to add together butter to the roux, I think I used nearly 2 TBS, but may not take been necessary. As well, I served over a fried egg over toast
ten/xvi/2018
Neat i grew upward having this as a kid I was then glad to notice the recipe very delicious
07/15/2018
I cooked my ground beef with diced fresh onion instead of onion salt and minced garlic instead of garlic powder. I also used toasted sourdough bread instead of regular white breadstuff. I will definitely be cooking this over again!
09/xiii/2017
I made this and instead of onion salt I used 3 small green onions, chopped. I also used season salt in identify of regular salt. Came out great and really easy to whip up.
04/05/2020
I did 2 cups of milk instead of 1 one/two, we loved it! I served it over biscuits. Definitely going to make this 1 again!
03/xx/2016
I was in the Military for 22 years, and I always looked forward to having this for breakfast. I've searched for the perfect recipe. And u just institute it here. This is exactly how I remember it. I didn't accept information technology with toast, instead I had it with a poached egg on a English muffin with some Canadian salary. I guess it'due south eggs Bridegroom with the SOS instead Hollandaise. Nonetheless you have information technology, you will honey it. I didn't change the recipe at all.
04/eleven/2022
My mom always made this when I was young and I could never lucifer it. This was the closest ever. Thank yous
09/07/2021
I have fabricated this recipe so many times. I've washed information technology exactly how it's written, And I've as well tweeked it a bit. I cook some bell pepper and onion with garlic offset, set up that bated.. and then cook this yummy stuff.. and add the veggies AFTER the meat has cooked. my daughter always asks for this!!
01/25/2022
I thought spice wise it was great. However when I doubled the recipe, I felt that doubling the flour was too much, fabricated it way to thick even with more milk. I would keep the flour the aforementioned and add a tad more milk!
09/08/2018
My family loved this meal. Only change I made was to add a little worcestershire sauce afterward reading some of the other reviews. We will definitely be making this again. Thanks for posting!
